Join us as Alexandra Marshall discusses the tension between fiction and memoir, with reference to her short story “Child Widow” (published in Ploughshgares, 2003) and her memoir The Silence of Your Name: The Afterlife of a Suicide, published in 2021.

In addition to writing seven books (fiction, non-fiction and memoir), Ms. Marshall has penned essays, feature stories, travel journalism and opinion for a number of literary journals, newspapers and magazines. She lives in Boston with her husband, the writer James Carroll.

Jun 23: The Local Journalism Project

The Local Journalism Project, the non-profit affiliate of The Provincetown Independent newspaper, provides financial support and training to aspiring reporters in their first two years in the field. Join us this Sunday for a talk by Janet Lesniak to learn how the Project is instilling the principles and practices of community reporting in the next generation of journalists. All are welcome.

Janet Lesniak is the past Executive Director of Wellfleet Preservation Hall and an artist in addition to her work with the Local Journalism Project. She also serves on the boards of Cape Wellness Collaborative and the Community Development.

Join us as Diane Turco provides a regional perspective on the nuclear irradiated water issue in the Plymouth area, specifically addressing the nuclear-contaminated water release from the

 

Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. She will shed light on how this issue impacts our oceans and our health.

Diane Turco is the director of Cape Downwinders, a grassroots activist organization with the goal to protect our communities and environment from the dangers present at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station and nuclear waste dump in Plymouth, MA. She has been working since 1984 to halt nuclear power and nuclear weapons.

May 26: A History of Eastham’s Veterans: Memories and Memorials

Join us as Marca Ann Daley shares stories about early Eastham War Veterans from the Revolutionary War, to the War of 1812, and to the Civil War; including stories of some Eastham servicemen in more recent conflicts. Marca will also share snippets of life in Eastham during WWII as found in a monthly newsletter that was sent to Eastham’s servicemen throughout the war, as well as photos & memories of Eastham school children through the years. She will also explain how the current Veterans Memorial housed at the 1869 Schoolhouse Museum came to be. Transportation can be provided by calling Angela at 508-778-1590. All are welcome.

Marca Daley was born & raised in Eastham. She worked as a teacher and administrator at the American Community Schools of Athens for 40 years. Upon her return to Eastham in 2013 she taught at the Sturgis Public Charter School. Today, Marca is Archivist and Museum Curator for the Eastham Historical Society. She is also a member of Eastham’s Historical Commission, as well as a board member and singer with the Outer Cape Chorale & Chamber Singers.

May 12: Cape Cod Children’s Place – A Resource for Families

Join us on Mother’s Day as we learn about the resources that Cape Cod Children’s Place
provides to Cape Cod families, particularly during these sometimes stressful times. Their
programs, offered at no cost, include early childhood education, playgroups, parenting
education, support and workshops that are offered from Provincetown to Barnstable at
community venues.

We will hear from Erin Sullivan, Executive Director of CCCP and/or Elizabeth Aldred, a
long-time activist and supporter.

Erin Sullivan is a non-profit professional whose wide range of experiences have provided her
with the skills, knowledge and heart for non-profit administration. She holds a Masters in Public
Administration with a concentration in nonprofit management. Elizabeth Aldred is an Advocacy
Coordinator at CCCP.

Apr 28: An Unexpected Antarctican – and the Iceberg that Rocked her World

Join us as Marlo Garnsworthy shares her incredible journey to Antarctica as a United States Antarctic Program Grantee. Marlo’s seven-week expedition was a life-changing experience, with one particular moment standing out: her encounter with an iceberg in the Ross Sea early one morning. Marlo’s perspective on Antarctica has transformed her, and she now dedicates her work to enlightening people, both young and old, about the extraordinary wonders of this continent. She emphasizes the interconnectedness between all of us, particularly those residing in coastal communities, and the importance of preserving and cherishing Antarctica’s remarkable nature.

Marlo Garnsworthy, an acclaimed author and illustrator, has an extensive background in both the arts and scientific research expeditions at sea. She excels as a science communicator and ardently supports the field of polar science. Currently, Marlo holds the position of Education and Outreach Coordinator, as well as the US Media Contact, for the international Antarctic project SWAIS2C (Sensitivity of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to 2 Celsius).

Apr 21: Environmental Challenges Facing Cape Cod in 2024

Join us as Andrew Gottlieb, Executive Director of the Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC), outlines the various environmental challenges facing us and how they relate to the vision of the APCC.  The APCC vision statement is: “A carbon-neutral Cape Cod where waters are restored and protected, and wildlife habitat are reserved, and where growth respects the character of town centers and rural lands.” All are welcome.

Andrew Gottlieb is executive director of the Association to Preserve Cape Cod. He has more than 30 years of environmental protection experience in government and elected terms in municipal office. He has extensive experience working at all levels of government, having served as a local, state and county official as well as a legislative staff person.

Apr 14: Are Domestic and Sexual Violence Preventable?

For over 40 years, Independence House, Inc. has been sharing knowledge and skills with survivors of domestic and sexual violence. But can these phenomenon be prevented? This Sunday, Chris Morin, Director of Prevention and Outreach, will talk about what she’s learned from her years of experience and about the organization’s mission to build an engaged community that actively prevents sexual and domestic violence. All are welcome.

Chris Morin has worked in the field of domestic and sexual violence for 20 years.  Her initial training in domestic and sexual violence was with the statewide coalition, the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance. In Virginia, she served on the statewide hotline. She is presently the Director of Prevention, Education and Outreach and has been with Independence House for 13 years.

Mar 31: Julie and Denya’s Songs Of The Sea and Songs Of Light

Join Nauset Fellowship in-person at Chapel in the Pines in Eastham or online via Zoom on Sunday, March 31 at 10am as Julie Charland and Denya LeVine perform sea shantys, folk songs, and lively fiddle tunes, all on the theme of the sea. You’ll hear guitar, fiddle, flute, ukuleles, and vocal harmonies that sparkle with joyous energy. All are welcome.

Julie Charland is a Nashville recording artist, award-winning songwriter, and local folk and bluegrass musician with Toast And Jam. Denya LeVines is a full time musician who’s performed on Cape Cod with folk and ethnic bands for 30 years. This duo has a zest for life that is contagious!
